SwedBio at the 11th meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity

SwedBio is co-hosting a side event titled ‘Human rights for thriving indigenous peoples, local communities and healthy ecosystems in the post-2020 global biodiversity agenda‘ with Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP), Forest Peoples Programme, IDLO, Natural Justice, and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

This side event is taking place at the 11th meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The Working Group was established to implement Article 8(j) of CBD – Traditional Knowledge, Innovations, and Practices, which aims to “respect, preserve, and maintain knowledge, innovations, and practices of indigenous and local communities whom maintain traditional lifestyles relevant for conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity.” Article 8 (j) also promotes equitable sharing of benefits that arise from traditional knowledge and practices.

This side event will specifically discuss how a human rights and ecosystem- based approach can best be included in the post-2020 global biodiversity framework as enabling conditions for ensuring the effective conservation, sustainable use, and fair and equitable sharing of the benefits of the world ́s biodiversity. It will look into how the new Programme of Work on Article 8(j) can be a mechanism to support the weaving of rights-based and ecosystem-based approaches in the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. In particular, it will discuss the role of environmental rights defenders, and the positive synergies that can be achieved when local people and conservation organizations can join as strategic allies.
