Minecraft Dungeons Dev Diary Sheds Light on Gameplay

Mojang talks about the heart of Minecraft Dungeons and how it lets players build their own playstyle.

Minecraft Dungeons launches sometime in April and is one of our more highly anticipated games of next year. We still don’t know too much about MC Dungeons, though Mojang are trying to change that with a new dev diary focused on how Minecraft Dungeons plays.

Director Mans Olson and Senior Designer Laura De Llorens both said the primary goal with Dungeons is retaining and reproducing the Minecraft feel. However, they recognize that means something different to basically everyone who plays Minecraft.

The challenge then boils down to creating fun and quirky feedback between the game and players, with a healthy balance between the expected and the unexpected.

One thing players can expect, Olson and De Llorens say, is a deep progression system centered around equipment. Looter games like Minecraft Dungeon live or die by the quality of their loot, and Minecraft Dungeons builds on that truth by incorporating different customization options called Enchantments for all the equipment.

These offer abilities or skills, sort of like Materia from Final Fantasy 7, which means there are endless opportunities for players to find or create their perfect playstyle.

The same goes for how to approach Minecraft Dungeons in general. The game will feature online multiplayer, local co-op, and single-player modes. Even though Olson hopes players enjoy working together in person, there’s still something for everyone.
