The Oak Leaf Trail spans 135 miles across Milwaukee County and serves more than 1 million people, but the popular bike and hiking path has a safety hazard: A sinkhole.
Milwaukee County Parks has received 80% of a $600,000-repair cost for a sinkhole on the Oak Leaf Trail from the Department of Transportation.
The other 20%, which is about $120,000, is being locally funded by the Department of Natural Resources and other community fundraisers.
Friends of Oak Leaf Trail set up a GoFundMe that will support the sinkhole’s repair.
Milwaukee County Parks will also petition the county for the remaining $50,000 to $60,000.
The sinkhole is between Silver Spring and Bender Road.
Milwaukee County Parks urges everyone to stay away from the sinkhole and the tunnel as it could collapse at any time.
