LEF Granted $2.4 Million through GO Virginia

The Loudoun Education Foundation was granted $2.4 million to create the Virginia K-12 Computer Science Pipeline program with Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) as well as Chesapeake Public Schools (CPS). This project will run for two years and will help to integrate computer science and computational thinking skills throughout the current curriculum. In addition to a sustainable integration model and resource development for K-12 Computer Science education, all LCPS and CPS high school students will have access to experiential learning opportunities (i.e. Internships, Mentorships, and Job Shadowing) to strengthen their qualifications for the tech workforce in their region. The goal of this initiative is to increase the number of students interested in computer science and pursuing careers in the technology industry.

Both school systems will work collaboratively to ensure that this initiative is replicable across the state of Virginia with a plan for professional development, a database of curriculum and procedures for integration into core subject areas, and guidelines for building partnerships with STEM companies to develop experiential learning opportunities.

Spring 2019 Teacher Grant in Action: Keva Blocks!

Last spring, Steven Charlish applied for a $500 LEF Teacher Grant to purchase Keva Blocks for students K-5 at Arcola Elementary School to use and get a better grasp of their engineering skills.

In the picture to the left, you see one of the students who created this structure after learning about tension and compression in stable structures. Mr. Charlish stated that she was also investigating patterns in nature and how our man-made structures can mimic them when she created the build.

If you are a teacher in LCPS and are interested in applying for Spring 2020 LEF Teacher Grants, follow this link. The application is due on Friday, February 21st. Any questions about the application can be directed to Linda Russ at [email protected].
