Guillermo from ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ visits Tex-Mex restaurant in Dallas on Oct. 14

The 'Guillermobile’ will be searching for Guillermo lookalikes at Mariano’s Hacienda.

On Monday, Oct. 14, Jimmy Kimmel Live sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez is touring through Dallas for a comedy stunt. He’s stopping by the longtime Tex-Mex joint Mariano’s Hacienda searching for Guillermo lookalikes to be featured on Kimmel’s late-night TV show on ABC.

Why? “Maybe we’ll replace [him],” Kimmel joked. Of course he wouldn’t do that: Guillermo has been a member of Kimmel’s show for years. According to his bio, Guillermo was originally a security guard for the show in 2003 and has become a more permanent fixture in later years. He’s the butt of many of Kimmel’s jokes, but it’s all part of their schtick.

Guillermo will bring the “Guillermobile” to four cities as a build-up to the week Kimmel does a series of live shows in Brooklyn, N.Y., in late October. Guillermo stops first in Dallas on Oct. 14, then will be in Chicago on Oct. 15, Pittsburgh on Oct. 16 and Philadelphia on Oct. 17.

Mariano’s Hacienda is the birthplace of the frozen margarita machine. It was invented in 1971 at the original Mariano’s on Greenville Avenue in Dallas and is now on display at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. The Tex-Mex joint is still known for its frozen margs, though the menu has evolved to include margaritas with cucumbers, jalapeños and sangria swirls.

Despite founder Mariano Martinez’s love for the frozen margarita, he’s actually more of an on-the-rocks drinker these days, he says.

Visitors to Mariano’s on Oct. 14 will of course find margaritas. As if it were a regular evening at the restaurant, guests will sit at tables and seating is first come, first served, with no reservations available. Filming starts at 6 p.m. and anyone at a table is welcome to spectate for free. (Though they’d appreciate if you stuck around and bought dinner.)

“This is Texas’ opportunity to show the rest of the country how friendly we are,” Martinez says. He’s thrilled his restaurant was chosen as Guillermo’s one Dallas stop.

Martinez encourages members of the public to wear jeans and boots if they come to the event.
