I’m going to say this straight away, I have fallen absolutely head over heels in love with the newest fragrance from Jo Malone. It is luscious! Here’s the lowdown on Jo Malone London Scarlet Poppy Cologne Intense.

I love the Jo Malone Cologne Intense collection and have quite a few favourites, in particular Vetiver & Golden Vanilla, and Myrrh and Tonka. This new addition has come along and slotted straight into the top spot. I really wasn’t expecting that.

I think its because it’s a scent that does so many different things. It has a beautiful powdery quality that feels like soft, clean and comforting cotton. It’s also rich and sensual, and it has an addictive sweetness that makes it feel really decadent.

My Review

For me, the first thing I notice is the rich velvety note of Iris which is in the heart, but I get from the very moment it is spritzed. It might be because I have a soft spot for orris notes. It’s such an interesting ingredient to me because the Iris flower naturally has no scent. The fragrance actually comes from the root of the Iris which requires a very complex extraction process, which takes at least three years.

The root has to be left in the ground before the scent can be extracted and this gives the soft, powdery note a very unique earthiness. It’s kind of clean and dirty at the same time! Such an amazing contrast.

The earthy, woodiness of the violet note is really complimented by the creaminess of the tonka bean, heliotrope and barley in the base. The combination conjures up for me an almondy-milky note. It makes the dry down subtly sexy and lingering on the skin. I love it.

Jo Malone London Scarlet Poppy Cologne Intense Notes

  • Top notes – Ambrette Seeds
  • Heart notes – Orris, Poppy, Fig
  • Base notes – Tonka Bean, Barley, Heliotrope

The one note that I can’t really detect is the fig, but I am fine with that because I really love what I do get from it. And the good news is that it’s permanent, although it may not always be in the red bottle. Talking of which, I adore the red bottle. I think it’s absolutely stunning.
