Can I build a social selling program or should I buy one? With social selling now becoming the de-facto way of selling, business has two options, do they build their own program or do they buy in the expertise? In this blog, I discuss lessons from history where companies should stick to what they know and not try and reinvent the wheel. Timothy (Tim) Hughes 提姆·休斯 big challenge with building one is the time to research, develop, test and refine the methodology…it takes years. On the other side, the temptation when buying one is to go with the easiest to purchase and install (quick and cheap). Any leader worth their salt knows that this is never a good option and is usually a precursor to a shift in leadership.
Thanks for posing such a great dilemma today Timothy. Whilst off the shelf can offer a lower cost, broader offer I firmly believe in terms of take up and application of key principles it is very limited. If you want to communicate a general message it might be OK, but if you're looking to bring about wholesale transformation in an organisation (or individual) it won't happen. Buying one which is more customised may be more expensive in the short run, however is likely to be more effective in the long run, especially if combined with long term support and coaching in order to imbed good practice, with an aim to build positive long-term habits - what we try to do DLA ignite. 😉

3yGreat points raised here Timothy. I don't believe in off the shelf solution and one size fits all, as each business is unique its operations, culture and needs. I believe it should be a collaborative process when it comes to mapping out a social selling strategy in which everyone is aligned and focused on the same end goal.
