San Francisco declares National Rifle Association a ‘domestic terrorist organization’
Shots have been fired from San Francisco at the National Rifle Association (NRA).
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a resolution on Sept. 3 labeling the gun rights advocacy group a “domestic terrorist organization,” the Washington Post reports. District 2 Supervisor Catherine Stefani wrote the declaration following the Gilroy Garlic Festival shooting on July 28, which claimed four lives.
“The NRA has it coming to them,” Stefani told KTVU. “And I will do everything I possibly can to call them out on what they are, which is a domestic terrorist organization.”
In addition to labeling the NRA, the Board of Supervisors called on the city and San Francisco County to do as much as possible in its power to limit organizations that do business with both governments from doing business with the association, SFGate reports.
It also calls for urging other cities, states and the federal government to adopt similar measures, according to KTVU.
In response, the NRA wrote in a news release that, “This ludicrous stunt by the Board of Supervisors is an effort to distract from the real problems facing San Francisco, such as rampant homelessness, drug abuse and skyrocketing petty crime, to name a few. The NRA will continue working to protect the constitutional rights of all freedom-loving Americans,” KTVU reports.
I don’t know if I agree that the NRA should be declared a terrorist organization, but I definitely think they should lose their tax exempt status. They are nothing but a promotional organization for the gun industry and aren’t the public service organization they once were.
“and aren’t the public service organization they once were” Really? tell that to the thousands of Scouts that take the firearms safety program each year. Or the thousands of hunters that take the Hunter Safety program each year. Or the thousands of people who take the firearms permit program each year. The firearms industry is like any other industry, they can advertise on their own without having to go thru the NRA and do exactly that, just like the automobile industry to name one. This designation by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors is nothing but a feel good publicity stunt to pacify their voter base. It means nothing, will accomplish nothing and only serves to pat themselves on the back. “should lose their tax exempt status”. Perhaps we should look into religious tax exemptions while we’re at it.
