Hello from the bindery!

My goodness, doesn’t time fly when you’re … looking after children! And with that said I can’t believe nearly a year and a half has passed since I went on maternity leave for the second time and David and I welcomed our second baby boy into our family. Fast forward to present day, and I’m now super excited to be back in the bindery tackling my to-do list – and trust me, there’s a lot!

The first thing on the list is to let you know what’s going on here at Bookshell. So David and I will endeavour to email you a monthly Bookshell ‘log-book’ giving you a little insight into bindery life, as well as first dibs on new products and any special offerings we may have (see the bottom of this email).

Sloe-ing down

Late summer has been beautiful here in Cornwall, and we’ve been spending lots of family time picking wild blackberries and sloes, with the plan of making jam and flavoured gin/vodka. One of our favourite spots is just over the river in a little village called Flushing, which combines delicious fruit picking with magical, scenic views (if you want the exact location, let me know). It has also been a delight to hear boy #2's first word which was, ‘Backbee’ (he's particularly fond of blackberries). I think he’s on-board with all the fruit picking!

Sloe on a sloe bush

In previous years, by late winter it becomes apparent that our sloe gin stock levels are fast depleting. So this year we tasked ourselves with picking enough sloes to make 4 litres of gin, which should (hopefully!) see us through the entire winter period. I don't know how this reflects on David and I. We do share sloe gin with visitors (occasionally!).

Blackberry vodka

Last year for the first time, David added blackberry vodka to our homemade repertoire, which was delicious and well worth the effort. Here is his blackberry vodka recipe if you’d like to give it a try for yourself.

Our personalised leather bottle labels

September special

Our autumnal foraging was the inspiration behind our playful ‘Tipple tags’. These beautiful leather labels can be hung around a decanter, wine bottle or home-brew bottle, and personalised with your choice of title. They make wonderful gifts especially when accompanied by the recipients favourite tipple. Or if, like us, you make your own moonshine, they simply help identify the contents several months later! Use code tip30 to get 30% discount until the middle of October.
