WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Marvel's Avengers, which releases Sept. 4.

With the release of Crystal Dynamics' Marvel's Avengers PS4 beta, players finally got to experience the game for the first time. The beta's initial reactions have been positive thanks to a large amount of content players have experienced. Not only do you get to experience the game's entire opening sequence, but you also get to explore other story missions, upgrade multiple characters, and unlock a secret story mission. The "Missing Links" story mission finds Ms. Marvel and Bruce Banner heading deep into AIM territory to find an old S.H.I.E.L.D. bunker that has a new neural uplink for J.A.R.V.I.S.

The Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. have disbanded after a devastating AIM attack on San Francisco, which detonated a Terrigen Crystal and covered the city in Terrigen Mist. The city is infested with mutated Inhumans, and AIM controls large sections of the planet. Ms. Marvel is on a quest to reunite the Avengers and save the Inhumans. The "Missing Links" mission starts players on their quest to find Tony Stark with J.A.R.V.I.S.' help. J.A.R.V.I.S. needs a new neural link that will plug him back online so he can locate Iron Man.

The mission kicks off at a War Table that shows a 3D geographical readout of the mission space. Once the mission has been selected, players are taken to the Chimera mission screen, where you assemble your team and experiment with their gear load-outs. During the mission briefing, J.A.R.V.I.S. will talk about the different types of mission modifiers and give hints about the type of gear players should equip. AIM enemies in the cold-weather regions deal cryo damage, so J.A.R.V.I.S. heavily suggests players equip gear with cryo resistance attributes.

The mission opens up on a massive frozen valley with an AIM base in the distance. Players quickly discover different side missions and activities to explore on their way to the S.H.I.E.L.D bunker, thanks to J.A.R.V.I.S.' helpful hints.  There are hidden chests with loot, a bounty system that lets players destroy high-value targets for special rewards, and depots that are special bunkers with top tier loot. The first depot players come across gifted gear with cryo resistance -- which specifically defends against the AIM forces cryo-based attacks.

Players smash their way through waves of minor and major enemies while searching for the bunker. The major objectives in this mission include holding plates from waves of enemies while J.A.R.V.I.S. locates the bunker. The enemies can freeze Hulk and Ms. Marvel, which leaves them vulnerable to damage for a small duration. The mission lets players explore the full range of each hero's unique abilities during combat, from traversing vast distances and using different special skills to varying combinations of light and heavy attacks and evading enemy damage with dodging capabilities.

This mission's climax finds players defending a S.H.I.E.L.D terminal from waves of advanced AIM synthoids. Hulk and Ms. Marvel enter the bunker and unlock a hidden message left by Nick Fury and find the neural link for J.A.R.V.I.S. Hulk and Ms. Marvel have one last battle while J.A.R.V.I.S. uploads the S.H.I.E.L.D protocols left by Fury into the neural link.

The "Missing Links" mission is an excellent example of this game's scope. The maps are large and invite exploration through the bounty systems and loot chests. The game looks gorgeous -- from the environments to the character models, everything seems much more polished compared to the War Table reveal streams. However, "Missing Links" combat and mission objectives felt fairly repetitive. Let's hope further missions expand on the types of objectives players have to complete. The entire mission consisted of defending plates from waves of enemies while JARVIS hacked terminals and downloaded data. Overall, the beta seems polished, and the early missions are unraveling a plot that is shaping up to be an epic story in the Avenger's universe. If the game's full content catalog can offer more gameplay variety, Marvel's Avengers could make a serious push for gamer's time come September.

Developed by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal and published by Square Enix, Marvel's Avengers arrives on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia and PC on Sept. 4.
