Barbados has lost an outstanding figure in the tourism industry, Richard Williams.

Williams’ widow Clare made the announcement in a Facebook post: “It is with much sorrow that we have to inform you that Richard, beloved husband to Clare and devoted father and grandfather to Alana, Penny and Liam, died Friday, November 26 due to complications with pneumonia.”

Tributes have flowed for Williams whose work was recognised regionally and internationally.

A former general manager and later CEO of Sandy Lane Hotel for many years, Williams made a name for himself as a proponent of the tourism and hotel industry, promoting and developing best practices.

In a statement released today, chief executive officer of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) Senator Rudy Grant said: “It is with great sadness that we learnt of the death of Richard Williams, tourism practitioner extraordinaire, whose energetic and high-spirited personality inspired many who met him. He was truly an international tourism icon whose passion and commitment to the global tourism industry was evidenced by his numerous contributions whether locally, regionally, or internationally.”

Williams, a former president of the Barbados Hotel Association (BHA now BHTA) was a recipient of the Barbados Silver Crown of Merit in recognition of his commitment and dedication to tourism. He was also awarded the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) Caribbean Hotelier of the Year.

Grant described Williams’ love for tourism, which he said was evident in the warmth, friendliness, respect, professionalism, and humanity displayed.

“He readily offered advice and would also volunteer to assist with activities. He was not simply prepared to talk but was willing to actively get involved in the work which needed to be undertaken.”

In expressing condolences, Grant said: “We will miss Richard, his effervescent personality, his infectious smile and his wit, which provided laughter on numerous occasions.” (Nation News)
