Using smartphone apps to monitor your driving may lead to you being charged the wrong premium by your insurer or even having your policy cancelled in error, an investigation has found.

So-called “insurtech” products are being used by more than a third of 17 to 25-year-olds according to GlobalData, an analytics company — but some may not provide reliable data.

Insurtech policies use an app on a driver’s iPhone or Android handset, or GPS and Bluetooth boxes in cars, to measure acceleration, braking, swerving and length of journey. The idea is that the technology can help lower premiums for good drivers within an age group that traditionally faces the highest insurance bills.
