The Hickory City Council approved a $1.9 million contract to replace the two hangars at the Hickory Regional Airport that were destroyed by a tornado in October 2017.
The contract with Moss Marlow Building Co. for a 32,000-square-foot hangar was approved unanimously as part of the council’s consent agenda.
The previous two hangars combined were 32,000 square feet, Hickory Communications Specialist Sarah Killian said.
The consent agenda consists of several items that are typically passed by the council with little or no discussion.
The contract will be covered in part by an insurance settlement of nearly $1.6 million, according to the agenda.
The city has asked for a $783,000 North Carolina Department of Transportation grant to cover remaining construction costs as well as the cost of a fire suppression system that was not a part of the bid for the project, according to the agenda.

Killian said construction on the new hangar is expected to begin in October and be complete in nine months.
Park Renaming
The council also voted to rename a section of Jaycee Park as part of the consent agenda.
The upper section of the park will now be known as Miracle of Hickory Park.
The name is a reference to the occasion in June 1944 when Hickory residents came together to build a polio hospital in 54 hours.
The park is located near the Hickory Music Factory, which was the site of the hospital.
The section of the land at the lower end of the park will still be known as Jaycee Park Ballfield.
