THE NEWSLETTER OF THE DIOCESES OF EASTERN & WESTERN MICHIGAN
Hello <<First Name>>,

The Rev. Darriel Harris will speak on food, faith, and justice on at 7pm on Thursday, January 30th at St. Philip's Episcopal Church, Grand Rapids.

Pastor Harris combines thoughtful Scriptural reflection and practical action with his church, Newborn Community of Faith, sponsoring Strength to Love II Farm in the Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood of Baltimore, made famous as the home of Freddie Gray. Strength to Love II serves as an employment site for citizens from the neighborhood returning from incarceration. It is a grassroots project that makes a tangible difference in the lives of those it serves, and it is anything but easy.

Rev. Harris is also a Ph.D. student at Johns Hopkins. His work focuses on faith-based interventions for public health outcomes. He began this work in south Sudan, where he learned that telling stories from Scripture motivated change in a way that scientific data alone did not. His work has since been featured by The Atlantic magazine, Duke World Food Policy Center, and the Johns Hopkins Health Review.

I hope you will join me in learning from Rev. Harris. He will be speaking not only from his education but also from his experience as a longtime faith-based leader in Baltimore working for healthy food access for all. I know that as I always do when we are together, I will learn from him.

The event is free and open to the public, but we request registration here so we can be sure to have enough space.

Peace,

The Rev. Nurya Love Parish

Rector, Holy Spirit, Belmont
Executive Director, Plainsong Farm

NEWS & UPDATES

Sudanese Grace Episcopal Church Receives the Gift of a New Church Home

Departing Wallin Congregational Church gives their building to SGEC

In September, Wallin Congregational Church voted to close their congregation and give their building to our siblings, the congregation of Sudanese Grace Episcopal Church.

Sudanese Grace was planted in the early 2000s by refugees, the "lost boys" of the civil war in South Sudan. They have been worshiping in space provided by other congregations since their founding, most recently with Mayflower Congregational Church in East Grand Rapids.

A service is planned for February 14th at 6pm to celebrate this act of generosity and to consecrate the building for SGEC's use. Please join us!

Camp Chickagami to Partner with ECCC in Grant-Funded Curriculum Building around Dismantling Racism

The collaboration received a Becoming Beloved Community Grant

Eastern Michigan's Camp Chickagami is one of six Episcopal Camps and Conference Centers that are embarking on a process to design a new curriculum for youth around dismantling racism, especially in a camp context. The participating camps were invited to this process because they are already invested in working on diversity and inclusion within their own context.

Several camps, including Camp Chickagami, will pilot the curriculum in their own context during Summer 2020 to eventually share with the wider Episcopal Camps and Conference Centers network.

This collaboration was made possibly by a Becoming Beloved Community Grant from the Episcopal Church, a competitive process.
