Sega renews trademark for Virtua Fighter and files 'Battle Genesis' for the arcades

Virtua Fighter 5 was released back in 2006-2007. An updated version of the game, Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, was later released in 2010-2012.

Needless to say, it's been quite some time since a new iteration of Virtua Fighter was released. Now might be the perfect time considering the success of other fighting games like Tekken 7 and Dragon Ball FighterZ.

As reported on by Siliconera, Sega recently renewed their Virtua Fighter trademark. This happened on October 2, 2018.

Suspiciously, Sega also filed for a new trademark on that same day. This was for something titled "Battle Genesis." This sounds like it could work as a subtitle for a new Virtua Fighter game — something like "Virtua Fighter 6: Battle Genesis."

Currently these trade marks are only for arcade cabinets. If there is indeed a new Virtua Fighter game that is currently in development, it will probably show up in the arcades first since Sega is known for being one of the biggest arcade brands.

Of course, nothing official has been announced yet. It's possible that "Virtua Fighter" and "Battle Genesis" are two separate intellectual properties. Still, it is at least something noteworthy that the same attorney, David Ehrlich, handled both trademarks.

Notably, Akira from Virtua Fighter (with a model that really emphasizes his polygons) will be making an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as an Assist Trophy. This could mean something is in development, but it could also mean nothing at all.
