Between 2017 and 2019, at least 41 people died and 133,000 others were sent to the emergency room with serious injuries from accidents on e-scooters and other micro-mobility products, according to the U.S.Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Injured Riders File Class Action Lawsuit Against Lime Scooters
In August 2020, a class action lawsuit was filed in San Francisco by several people who were injured on Lime electric scooters. They claim the scooters were defective or poorly maintained. The injuries include broken bones, concussions and cracked teeth.
In one case, a woman named Margaret M. said she rented a scooter with defective brakes that locked up, causing her to fall. She suffered a concussion, two chipped teeth and and one cracked tooth that required an implant.

Lime Scooters Recalled for Breaking in Half
In November 2018, Lime issued a global recall for Okai model electric scooters because they could break in half during use, according to the Washington Post. The recall came several weeks after Lime warned that the scooter baseboards can sometimes crack or break apart “when subjected to repeated abuse” or “if ridden off a curb at high speed.”
Riders Report Lime Scooters Broken in Half
Riders in cities throughout the U.S. have also regularly reported on social media that they’ve seen Lime scooters broken in half, usually where the baseboard meets the stem.
Texas Man Dies After Falling Off Scooter that Broke in Half
In September 2018, a 24 year-old man from Dallas, Texas named Jacoby Stoneking died after falling off a Lime scooter and suffering a head injury. He was found unconscious and badly injured several hundred yards away from a Lime scooter that was broken in half in the road.
Lime Mechanics Warn About Safety Hazards
One mechanic for Lime said cracks could develop in the baseboard within days of an electric scooter being placed on the streets.
Another mechanic reported that the scooters can snap even when the rider weighs as little as 145 pounds, and wrote:
“I would suggest that these are unsafe for public use. It’s only a matter of time before someone is severely injured…if not here, somewhere else.”
What is a Lime Scooter?
Neutron Holdings, Inc., doing business as Lime, is a company that operates green-colored Lime-S electric scooters and Lime-E bicycle sharing systems in various cities. The systems use a mobile app to unlock the scooters or bikes, charging riders per minute for a ride.
Lime Recalls Scooters for Battery Fire Hazard
In August 2018, Lime recalled certain Segway Ninebot scooters because a manufacturing defect could cause the battery to smolder or catch on fire. About 2,000 Lime scooters were removed from streets in San Diego, Los Angeles, and Lake Tahoe.
