This Eco-Friendly Shipping Container House Is Suspended Off the Ground to Blend In with Nature

If you’re looking for green living inspiration, you’ve come to the right place. Not only is this custom-made “treehouse” made of 80 percent recycled materials (mostly shipping containers, as you can see), but it also is quite literally intertwined with the natural environment.

Built by Casa Container Marília, this sustainable house in Brazil is a prime example of how to build a home with the environment in mind. The Suspended House is built with shipping containers as well as demolition wood, and it received its name from—you guessed it—actually being elevated off the ground.

There are two reasons for suspending the house: first, the architects wanted to lessen the build’s impact on the environment. By keeping the sustainable house off of the soil, they preserved the roots from being damaged and also maintained the soil’s drainage system.

The second reason for elevating the house is so the windows were at the same height as the treetops and the balconies were integrated in with the branches. Not only does this prevent obstructed views, but it also creates a sense of togetherness within nature.

In addition to the sustainability behind the elevation, the shipping container house is also equipped with a green roof that collects rainwater. This allows for the building to more naturally blend in with the surrounding ecosystem, reducing the need for excess irrigation.

And the inside is no less impressive. Complete with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, the interior is covered in wooden finishes that truly embody its treehouse aesthetic. The house also has an open floor concept that creates a flow between the kitchen area and living spaces.
