Whitney Cummings’ “The Female Brain” Snagged by IFC

Whitney Cummings’ directorial debut has secured distribution. IFC Films scored the U.S. and Canadian rights to “The Female Brain,” Variety reports. Based on Louann Brizendine’s bestselling book of the same name, the ensemble comedy’s cast includes Cummings, Sofia Vergara (“Modern Family”), James Marsden (“Westworld”), Beanie Feldstein (“Lady Bird”), and Cecily Strong (“Saturday Night Live”). Cummings wrote the script with Neal Brennan (“The Daily Show”).

According to its official synopsis, the film will “comically detail the inner workings and complex power of brain chemistry among couples at different stages in their relationships … whether it’s finding the right romantic balance; parenting; overcoming commitment issues; expressing emotion; or simply admitting to being useless around the house.”

Cummings created and starred in NBC’s “Whitney,” a comedy that ran for two seasons from 2011–2013. The stand-up comedian co-created CBS’ “2 Broke Girls,” which concluded its sixth and final season in April.

“I feel very lucky that someone let me make a comedy about neurology, a topic that’s normally not associated with hilarity,” Cummings said in a statement. “I think given the current news cycle, a movie that scientifically proves that women are not ‘crazy’ or ‘psycho’ might just be kind of refreshing.”

Cummings released a memoir last month, “I’m Fine… and Other Lies.” “I was finally able to stave off my social media and online shopping addictions long enough to give you a whole book’s worth of yummy, humiliating schadenfreude,” she writes in the introduction.
