About the Author

Tom Pfeifer may not have been born a writer, but he has been carrying a pad of paper and writing utensils in his pockets since he was seven years old. After collecting a shoebox full of rejection slips for a series of failed short stories, Tom embarked on a 15-year journalism career in Southern California, where he won awards from The Associated Press, United Press International, and others for individual writing and group coverage. During his journalistic career, he stood on a dam that was in danger of collapsing, landed in a helicopter on a warship rocking in the Pacific Ocean, crawled through a warehouse as aftershocks from the Northridge Earthquake shook the ground violently, walked on petroleum-stained rocks in Alaska's Prince William Sound in the wake of the Exxon Valdez disaster, and witnessed five living presidents dedicate Ronald Reagan's presidential library. He then moved to the nation's capital to serve as a congressman's press secretary and communications director. There, he communicated his boss's role in the impeachment of President Bill Clinton, the aftermath of 9/11, numerous terrorism hearings, and the release of journalist James Foley from Libya strongman Moammar Ghadafi. In September 2013, he founded Consistent Voice Communications, LLC, where he serves as Managing Partner and helps small businesses, associations, and individuals Communicate for Success! through clear, concise, and consistent messaging. As a congressional communicator, Pfeifer wrote numerous speeches-for other people. But he was too terrified to stand before an audience himself and try to say anything coherent. In addition to offering valuable guidelines, Tom Pfeifer invites readers’ curiosity on the journey to excellence in writing and presenting speeches. As a speaker Tom is uniquely gifted by having evolved from successful writing career in the political and social environment.

“Write It, Speak It” is both analytical and narrative as the author includes historical references and his personal examples. Reading is easy since the author refers to the well known rules e.g. “Show, don’t tell “and expands on them with his unique and practical view.
Mr. Pfeifer facilitates the retention of teaching by using often the rule of three structure and the wrap up at the end of chapters. His guidance on speaking is based on his own experience with the reputable and disciplined environment of Toastmasters. Teaching is present in all aspects of the book, even titles of the chapters by themselves teach, e.g. “Speech Writing is Scriptwriting.”

I consider “Write It , Speak It” as a complete, concise and practical guide for anyone who appreciates the unity of writing and speaking as the core of successful business communication.

Full Disclosure... I know Tom Pfeifer and have seen him develop as a speaker in Toastmasters. From a shy, hesitant, faltering voice, he now commands the stage whenever he delivers a talk. I had not previously read anything of his, even though I knew he was a professional writer. Now I have. “Write it, Speak it,” is full of salient thoughts about the process of creating and delivering a speech. It is a breezy read, devoid of any blather, which is illuminating to anyone who wants to become a better speech maker.. I strongly recommend it, especially to those who thinks that he/she is not capable of being effective on stage.

“Write it, Speak it: Writing a Speech They’ll Applaud!” reads like a book written by a professional writer who also is an experienced public speaker. It should. The author, Tom Pfeifer, is a writer by profession and an experienced Toastmaster and speaker by avocation.

The book is a delightfully quick and easy read but its brevity and simplicity are deceptive. It is well-written and very informative. It will serve as an excellent primer for beginning speakers but also as a useful guide and valuable resource document for those already accustomed to speaking in public.

Tom Pfeifer covers key aspects of writing and public speaking in clear language with fun and inspiring examples. He provides the reader with ample tips and techniques for preparing and delivering speeches and presentations that will earn applause at the end but that also will be remembered and talked about long after the applause has subsided.

I highly recommend “Write it, Speak it: Writing a Speech They’ll Applaud!” to educators, government officials, business men and women, NGO, community, and religious speakers, Toastmasters, and anyone who wants to prepare and deliver informative, motivational, and entertaining speeches that will have powerful and memorable messages.

This is a well written, accessible and interesting how-to book on improving your public speaking. Tom spices the book up with personal stories and his signature sense of humor. Fresh off the success of an award winning speech in Toastmasters, he clearly explains the process he used to achieve this accomplishment. He includes the stage directions and screen play for the speech as an appendix, so the reader can learn how to effectively incorporate body language and vocal variety into speeches for an added edge in speech competitions or to knock it out of the ball park with a professional presentation. He not only describes how to improve vocal variety, and other strategies to engage an audience, but he also analyzes other award winning Toastmasters speeches, such as the 2012 world championship speech, Ryan Avery's "Trust is a Must." Finally, I was fascinated by his discussion on effective literary devices in speeches such as John F. Kennedy's use of chiasmus in his Inaugural Address. This is a book I plan to revisit again and again as I present more speeches and presentations at Toastmasters and in my career.

Both new and experienced public speakers can benefit from reading Write it, Speak it: Writing a Speech They'll Applaud, which offers many practical, hands-on suggestions for producing successful presentations. I like Tom Pfeifer’s conversational writing style and the anecdotes about his writing and speaking experiences that he weaves throughout the text. One addition that could make this already good book even better would be to end each chapter with a list of key takeaways. Maybe that's something to consider for a future edition (if there is one). All in all, an enjoyable, fast-moving book that's well worth reading if you're looking to improve your public speaking skills.
