'I don't even know the woman': Moore addresses sex assault allegations

GALLANT, AL (WSFA) - Senate candidate Roy Moore addressed allegations Monday night that he sexually assaulted a woman when she was minor in the 1970s.

Moore, surrounded by supporters, called the allegations false.

"I never did what she said I did. I don't even know the woman. I don't know anything about her. I don't even know where the restaurant is or was," Moore said.

In a news conference with attorney Gloria Allred Monday, Alabama resident Beverly Young Nelson said Moore sexually assaulted her in his vehicle in 1977. Nelson said she was a waitress at Old Hickory House restaurant, and Moore was a regular customer. She also said Moore signed her yearbook, which she brought to the news conference.

Moore's wife, Kayla  Moore, also addressed the allegations against her husband Monday night.

"I have been married to this man for 32 years, we've been together for 33 all together, he has never one time lifted a finger to me. He's the most gentle, most kind man that i have ever known. He is godly, he's loving and everybody in this community knows it," Kayla Moore said.

Moore and his wife said the allegations are politically motivated.

"These things are false, and it's ugly. It's the ugliest politics that I've ever been in in my life," Kayla Moore said.

Kayla Moore also took to social media to defend her husband Monday. In one post, she claimed her husband's accusers are being paid.

"We are gathering evidence of money being paid to people who would come forward," Kayla Moore wrote on her personal Facebook page. "Which is part of why we are filing suit!"

Four other women have accused Moore of pursuing them when they were teens. One of the women told the Washington Post she had a sexual encounter with Moore when she was 14 years old.
