Monster Mash
Originally released in August 1962, “Monster Mash” is the most well-known song from American singer Bobby Pickett. Inspired by a Boris Karloff imitation he did while performing with his band, Bobby wanted to do a song with this same impression. The song is primarily about an unnamed scientist who throws a party for a collection of monsters.
The song quickly became a success, and it hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 the week before Halloween in its release year. “Monster Mash” remains popular to this day, and people of all ages play it at Halloween every year.
This is Halloween
As a song with the word Halloween right in the name, you can image that “This is Halloween” is played a lot around this time of year. This song was written by Danny Elfman for the 1993 stop-motion film The Nightmare Before Christmas. Played at the beginning of the film, this song introduces the bizarre monsters and creatures that live in Halloween Town.
The characters in the film sing the song to celebrate the arrival of Halloween, so many people listen to it when Halloween actually arrives.
Thriller
Widely considered one of the most iconic songs of all time, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” is played many times in the lead-up to Halloween. Rod Temperton wrote the song, and before the final name came to be, he originally wanted to call it “Starlight.”
The song was famously used in a 14-minute horror-themed music video that was inspired by famous horror films from the 1950s. During the music video, Jackson appears as a zombie and dances with other members of the living dead. Both the song and the music video were critically successful, and the song ranks as one of Jackson’s best.
Ghostbusters
It should come as no surprise that a song about ghosts would be played a lot at Halloween. Written by Ray Parker Jr. for the film of the same name, “Ghostbusters” is a song about the team of ghost chasers from the movie. Parker wrote the song in only a few days, and tried to make it sound like an advertising jingle that the team would have used in real life.
Thanks to the many strange-looking ghosts that appear in the film, many people like to watch the Ghostbusters film around Halloween. As a result, it only makes sense that fans would want to listen to the song as well.
Somebody’s Watching Me
“Somebody’s Watching Me” is a 1984 song that was originally recorded by American singer Rockwell. Michael Jackson and his brother Jermaine Jackson provided backup vocals in the original version of the song. In the song, Rockwell sings about how he is always being watched, and in the music video made for the song it is revealed that he is being watched by ghostly figures.
The widespread success of the music video helped the song to become the smash hit it is today.
