Kalamazoo police break up drug robbery, confiscate loaded handgun

KALAMAZOO, MI -- Working with a tip, officers with a drug enforcement team broke up a planned drug robbery and seized a loaded 9mm handgun.

Officers with the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team received a tip on Friday, Oct. 13 about a planned drug transaction in the 1000 block of Walter Street.

According to the tipster, the buyers planned to rob the dealer of drugs and money.

The officers set up surveillance in the area and intervened as two people approached another man. Police found the handgun on one of the would-be robbers.

They also found "dealer amounts" of heroin, methamphetamines, marijuana, and controlled prescription pills in a search of the people.

Police arrested two Kalamazoo men, ages 41 and 24, on charges of attempted armed robbery and possession with intent to deliver heroin. The younger man also is to be charged with felony firearm.

Police released a third person at the scene, but expect to seek charges against him for possession with intent to deliver methamphetamines.
