American Airlines and British Airways are running a good deal on premium economy (or “World Traveller Plus” for BA, if you wear a monocle) to Amsterdam. From October through March round trip fares are $966+ from Los Angeles. While it’s not hard to get sub-$1000 premium economy fares to Europe, two things stand out for this one. First, Thanksgiving travel is included (or a NYE stay is possible too for ~$100 more). Second, Amsterdam isn’t as cheap a destination from LAX as other cities, which are often only ~$500 in regular economy. In contrast, main cabin economy fares to Amsterdam are usually over $700, meaning the extra comfort offered here is just ~$250 more. Put a different way, PE is just $12.50 an hour more than normal economy for these flights.
Another great option for these fares is using Chase Ultimate Rewards to book. With the Chase Sapphire Reserve, these flights cost about 64,000 UR; plus you’ll earn miles for your trip (about 11,000 with AA). For comparison, AA would charge you 80K miles plus $56. A solid example of why transferable currencies are very valuable.
British Airways’ World Traveller Plus
BA’s premium economy seats are 18.5″ wide with 38″ pitch and extra recline, great for stretching out. BA also touts improved dining, pre-departure beverage, noise-cancelling headphones, amenity kit, priority boarding, and extra baggage. In other words: BA premium economy really is a mid-level experience between economy and business class.
As these flights include a single stop (usually London outbound, sometimes Philadelphia inbound) the trans-Atlantic leg is in PE, with the shorter leg in the main cabin. These sometime reprice slightly higher when booked directly, but show the lowest prices in OTAs or Chase’s travel portal. This deal may last a bit long than most others; as noted, premium economy to Europe isn’t a hard find necessarily. But there’s never a guarantee, so book sooner rather than later if these work for you.
