Gig review: Paves – Electric Ballroom 14/10/17

Paves played Camden’s Electric Ballroom on Saturday evening as part of This Feeling’s event. I’ve been following Paves for a couple of years now. I first saw them when they supported Dirty Thrills Upstairs at The Garage in November 2015. I’d never heard of them before but came away from the gig as a fan. I really enjoyed that show and have been meaning to catch them live again ever since.

Saturday’s performance was brilliant. In their half-hour set, they played their latest release “Baby” and “Beat The Gun”. They also played another song I was familiar with, “Take Me While I’m Here”.

Paves’ music has an engaging upbeat rock ‘n’ roll style. The singer’s voice is instantly recognisable, which makes for a unique sound. On stage, the singer, Luke Shield, is extremely charismatic – perfect for a frontman.

On Saturday night, Paves played some songs that I hadn’t heard before. For one of the songs, with quite a bluesy sound, a female backing singer accompanied the band on stage.

Another one of the songs was slightly heavier with passionate lyrics. It sounded great. I managed to film a bit of it:

It was an amazing gig. I enjoyed every minute of it, and it was over too soon! I’m looking forward to seeing these guys live again. They’ve been getting a lot of attention from the music media recently and have played a few festivals. They’re definitely a band to watch!

The Electric Ballroom is quite a large venue. When Paves got on stage, there were a lot of people milling around in the bar and other areas, and maybe fifty or so around the stage area, but after Paves played just a couple of songs I noticed that area in front of the stage was filling up. By the end of their set the room was almost full, with everyone watching the band. This isn’t a band you can ignore. They have a great stage presence that attracts you to them and their music is mesmerising.

Paves are currently supporting Starsailor on their UK tour. If you’re going to any of the gigs, make sure you get there early to catch Paves! 🙂
