Snow is starting to hit the mountains, and Colorado’s ski resorts are here for it.

A dusting of snow hit mountains above 10,000 feet Thursday night, as well as I-70 when it gets above 11,500 feet in Summit County, according to National Weather Service meteorologist David Barjenbruch.

“Winter is coming here,” he said.

More snow is expected to hit this weekend. A first wave, which will be the weaker of two, has already started dropping snow above 10,000 feet. Roughly 2 to 5 inches may drop on higher peaks Friday afternoon into early evening, bringing rain showers across the Plains, including Denver.

The heavier storm starts tomorrow afternoon and will continue into early next week, Barjenbruch said. A few more inches of snow will fall on the mountains, mostly above 11,000 feet. Snow might start accumulating on mountain roads at the start of the week, dropping into the foothills and potentially even reaching Denver (if it’s cold enough down here).

With all the good weather news, many resorts have taken to social media to express their excitement. See what they’ve posted on The Know Outdoors.
