HSA Investing Fee Comparison Spreadsheet: Who Wants to Check My Work?

Post by Jon Luskin »

This is likely overkill - but if you're obsessed with minutia, have I got something for you!

Given my goal to invest 100% of money in 100% stocks, I couldn't figure out which HSA was the best. So, I decided to run the numbers. It looks like HSA Bank (and opting to simply pay the feeS) and Health Savings Administrators are too close to call. At least, that's the case for my particular circumstance.

In the end, I'll likely go with Health Savings Administrators because I'm turned off by the recent game that TD has been playing with its fund offerings.

But, all that assumes that I didn't make any mistakes on my nerdy spreadsheet. Would anyone mind reviewing the above spreadsheet and letting me know if I missed the mark on anything?

Thanks!

Most people who open an HSA at Saturna don't use Saturna's in-house mutual funds (which have the higher expense ratios you noted). Instead, they use Saturna's brokerage arm to buy other mutual funds or ETFs. The transaction fee to buy Vanguard or Fidelity funds is $25 per purchase (roughly equivalent to a $25 annual fee if you limit yourself to one purchase per year) and the transaction fee to buy ETFs is $15 per purchase. No annual fees so long as you have at least one trade per year.

You are leaving off some providers that have been discussed on the board:

HSA Authority - $36 annual fee w/ selected mutual funds
Selectaccount -$36 annual fee w/ selected mutual funds
Lively - $30 annual fee w/ TD Ameritrade brokerage

Wow. Never heard of Lively before. That looks like that could be the best way to go!

I think so. I moved everything there a couple of weeks ago from my employer-sponsored HSA. Their customer service is very responsive.

Added bonus: They take the $2.50 per month fee from your linked checking account, rather than from inside the HSA. (And they prorated my first month's investing fee, deducting $1.05 last week for the month of October.)

I didn’t notice HealthEquity in your spreadsheet.
