University Hospitals, SummaCare to offer Medicare coverage

CLEVELAND, Ohio - University Hospitals and SummaCare announced today the two organizations will offer co-branded Medicare coverage.

Dubbed University Hospitals Medicare Advantage from SummaCare, the coverage will be available in markets with UH facilities, according to a news release. The partnership will allow for more holistic care than fee-for-service care, the organizations said.

"We expect our members to achieve improved quality of care, better health outcomes and an overall outstanding patient experience," Anne Armao, SummaCare vice president of marketing and consumer engagement, said in a statement.

UH will offer dedicated care managers to help coordinate services with SummaCare, an Akron-based health insurance company. SummaCare and UH have worked together since 2007.

"We anticipate working even more closely with SummaCare's clinical teams with the common goal of helping people enjoy healthier lives as they age," Brent Carson, UH vice president of managed care contracting, said in a statement.

Enrollment begins Oct. 15 and ends Dec. 7. Coverage will begin Jan. 1, 2018.

Those enrolled will have access to both UH providers and other providers in the SummaCare Medicare network. The network includes more than 10,000 providers and 63 hospitals, including Summa Health.

The Cleveland Clinic earlier this year announced plans to enter the individual insurance market through a joint venture with New York-based Oscar Insurance Corp., a health insurance tech startup run by Jared Kushner's brother Josh Kushner.

The new Cleveland Clinic | Oscar Health individual plans are available on the public exchange, off the exchange or directly through Oscar in five Northeast Ohio counties during 2017 open enrollment.
