BREWERS SIGN STRIKER ON LOAN DEAL

23 August 2017

BURTON Albion have signed striker Joe Mason on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers until January 2.

The 26-year-old goal scorer spent five seasons with Cardiff City before joining Wolves in 2016. He began his career in the youth set up at Plymouth Argyle and has under 21 caps with the Republic of Ireland.

He will add to the Brewers attacking options after the long-term injury to summer signing Liam Boyce.

Brewers manager Nigel Clough said: “It wasn’t so much a case of missing out on Cauley Woodrow we were making enquiries about Joe at the same time and we are delighted to get a deal done until January.

“It’s a bit like the Sean Scannell situation – 26 years old, approaching his prime, wants to play games and we are looking forward to seeing him play for us.

“We need goals and when you lose your main striker for that then now we are building up other options and we are not ruling out getting someone else in as well. Now we have Joe, Lucas Akins, Sean Scannell, Luke Varney and Marvin Sordell we have options.”

Mason said: “I came to watch the game against Birmingham on Friday and I was impressed with what I saw and now I’m really happy to be here and for it to be all signed up.

“I think it will suit me really well, the way the team plays. I know the league really well. It’s relentless but I feel I can help the team and I’m really looking forward to it.”
