5 State Parks You May Never Have Heard Of
You are probably familiar with the larger state parks such as Letchworth State Park, Allegany State Park, Jones Beach State Park and many more, you may not be familiar with the smaller state parks that have just as much to offer. Take a peek at five state parks that you may not know about.
1. Betty and Wilbur Davis State Park
Location: 133 Davis Road, Westford, NY 12197
Fun Fall Feature: Betty and Wilbur Davis State Park is nestled on a hill with views of the rolling hills in Otsego County, which is a great spot to capture the vibrant fall colors. In addition to the terrific views, the park also offers six cottages, two man-made ponds and numerous hiking trails.
2. Four Mile Creek State Park
Location: 1055 Lake Road, Youngstown, NY 14174
Fun Fall Feature: Four Mile Creek State Park is located just 15 minutes north of Niagara Falls. This is a perfect location to soak in the beautiful fall landscape and stay in a Yurt! Four Mile Creek State Park now has six yurts available for campers to reserve. There are also hiking trails to explore and witness the changing colors of fall.
3. Robert G. Wehle State Park
Location: 5182 State Park Road, Henderson, NY 13650
Fun Fall Feature: Robert G. Wehle State Park is the former estate of Mr. Wehle. Among the facilities available to the public is the residential compound featuring the main house, guest quarters, the "studio" and formal gardens that visitors can rent. The paths along the shoreline of Lake Ontario can be the perfect backdrop of a gorgeous fall walk.
4. Schodack Island State Park
Location: 1 Schodack Island Way, Schodack Landing, NY 12156
Fun Fall Feature: Schodack Island State Park is positioned on the eastern shore of the Hudson River just south of Albany. In addition to the eight miles of multi-use trails wind through a variety of ecological communities, the park has a new improved kayak/canoe launch. On a nice warm fall day, take a nice kayak trip up or down the Hudson and enjoy the mirrored images of fall on the water.
5. Stony Brook State Park
Location: 10820 Route 36 South, Dansville, NY 14437
Fun Fall Feature: Stony Brook State Park's greatest feature is a deep gorge with rugged cliffs overlooking three waterfalls and fascinating rock formations. Stony Brook also offers new "rustic" cabins. The cabins are the perfect in-between for campers who like tents and cabins. Offering protection from the elements, they sleep four, but have no electricity or water.
