WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Reignited Fitness gym hosted a three-day CrossFit competition with proceeds benefiting the families of 16 marines that died in a plane crash in July.

The competition started Friday with a paddle, bike and run at Carolina Paddleboard. Saturday and Sunday 137 athletes competed on teams and individually in various CrossFit challenges.

Teams paid a fee between $200 to $300 to compete, and individuals paid between $70 to $130.

The money from the event went to Raising Raiders, a local nonprofit dedicated to helping the families of Marine Special Operations Command. Raising Raiders lost 16 marines after their military plane crashed in Mississippi a couple of months ago.

The owner of the gym that hosted the competition said the event was about something bigger than just fitness.

"I think it's important to let people feel that energy and be a community together and if it means that we build something for them to come to locally and they get to come out here and be athletes and support a good cause then it works," said Nick Mazejka.

Organizers said the competition raised between $5,000 and $6,000.
