NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Angela Hewett, a visual arts teacher at Ashley High School, has been named one of two finalists for the Southeast Regional Teacher of the Year.

Earlier this year, Hewett was named the top educator in New Hanover County.

Cameron Gupton, an American history teacher at Greene Early College High School in Greene County, is the other finalist.

The winner will be announced in December after a panel completes its classroom observations.

If Hewett claims the Southeast Regional Teacher of the Year honor, she will move on and compete against other regional winners for the state's top teacher award, which will be announced in May.

The Southeast region is composed of the following 12 counties: Brunswick, Carteret, Craven, Duplin, Greene, Jones, Lenoir, New Hanover, Onslow, Pamlico, Pender, and Wayne counties.
