It’s no surprise that drinking wine has become increasingly popular across the United States, especially with Millennials. With some of the world’s best vineyards located right on American soil, more and more people are choosing to emerge themselves in wine culture. Whether it’s enjoying a glass socially at a restaurant or privately with a few guests at home, wine is often the alcoholic beverage of choice for many Americans.

Which State Drinks the Most Wine?

Business Insider conducted the most recent research on how much wine America is really consuming on a yearly basis. Interestingly, the District of Columbia (D.C.) finished at the top of the list. That’s a bit of a head-turner, as most people would assume states like New York or California would be more likely to top the list.
New York, in fact, did not even make the top 10, while California came in at number eight on this list. Besides D.C., New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and New Jersey round out the top five. Other surprises near the top of the list include Rhode Island and Delaware, while not so surprising is Nevada and Connecticut.

U.S. Wine Sale Trends in 2016

Wine sales typically increase at a rate of about one to two percent each year. 2015 yielded gross revenues of $38.0 billion; surpassing the previous year’s growth for the 23rd year in a row. The U.S. also exported about $383 million in cases of wine last year, with California accounting for the majority of that at $233 million.
We’ve stated that this generation is serious about their wine, and that is reflective in the numbers. 36% of age-appropriate Millennials consume wine, which is more than any previous generation. Baby boomers come in second at 34%. An even more intriguing statistic is that 35% of Americans consider themselves to be high-consuming wine drinkers, meaning that they drink wine several times a week.

As 2016 reaches its midpoint, there have already been some obvious trends taking shape for this year. Firstly, there is an increase in “premiumization,” which is the desire for more premium products. This demand reflects the consumers’ willingness to spend more in order to get better-quality wines. With the increased popularity of wine, it is not surprising that oenophiles are going to keep pushing the boundaries of what they want and expect, despite the fact that those boundaries are going to come at a premium.
Direct-to-consumer (DTC) shipping also seems to be the wave of the future. 2015 saw a double-digit increase in the number of consumers who had bottles shipped directly to their homes. This portion of the industry hit $2.0 billion in 2015, which was an eight percent increase over the year before and this trend is expected to grow, even with the average price of a bottle being $38.
Lastly, there is the popularity of sparkling wine. It took a major leap this past year, growing as much as 12%. Prosecco is the main reason for this growing interest in sparkling wine, but Sangria has also become hugely popular, growing at a rate of close to 10%.
