New Dangerous Apps for Kids
A new school year is bringing some new potentially dangerous social networking apps for parents to be aware of heading in.
13 News found out just how easy it is for your child to be targeted through those apps.
The newest social networking apps are yellow , and one called "Sarahaa" experts say they can make easier than ever before for your child to put themselves at risk.
Raising kids today is a far cry from what it used to be.
"They are smart, mine can get into any tablet or smart phone,” said father Jason Brown.
Brown's 12 year old daughter jasmine loves staying connected, but he worries new apps could have her sharing too much.
"It's almost like lowering the age of consent,” Brown said.
One of those apps is Sarahah, currently number one in the app store where it was just released in June, Sarahah allows people to give anonymous feedback, and many call it a breeding ground for bullying.
Topeka Public Schools Police Chief Ron Brown said that law enforcement become concerned about with anonymous apps because people seem to be emboldened by it.
“We also understand that a lot of that language is very hurtful especially to children,” Brown said.
Another app is Yellow app, it's essentially the Tinder app, targeted for 12 to 16 year olds under the pretense of becoming friends, and it can give your kids location out to strangers.
"Part of the problem with law enforcement with the yellow app is that we don’t always know who's on the other side,” Brown said.
“We want to make sure that the parents are involved, that they understand what their children are doing and they have some supervision over what they're doing."
If you think talking to your kids about app safety isn't enough, you can install the mmguardian parental control app on your child’s smartphone to monitor their activity.
