Therapeutics Newsletter Summer Update

Welcome to our summer newsletter! This month we're looking at how physiotherapy can improve women's health. Women’s Health Physiotherapy is the therapeutic treatment of all disorders affecting the pelvis and pelvic floor.

From incontinence to prolapse, pelvic pain or constipation, there is growing evidence that physiotherapy can alleviate, and in many cases cure these symptoms. Most women don’t know that help is available, and it can be an embarrassing topic so we hope that now you are aware of this service on offer at Therapeutics you can contact us if you would like our assessment and advice.

The pelvic floor muscles are often described as a hammock lifting and supporting the pelvic organs above. These muscles need to be able to contract to keep us continent, but also they must relax to allow for urination, bowel movements, child birth and sexual intercourse. Problems with the pelvic floor can occur when these muscles are too weak (hypotonic) or too tight (hypertonic). It is also possible for these muscles to combine a pattern of too much tension in some areas while too relaxed in others!

The good news is that a structured exercise program to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles is effective in reversing the symptoms in 80% of women.

Importance of Balance Training
Balance training is sometimes neglected when people are developing their fitness regime, often because they don’t understand the benefits. Balance is the ability to control your body’s position, whether stationary (i.e. a complex yoga pose) or while moving (e.g. skiing).

Balance is a key component of fitness, along with strength, endurance, and flexibility. There are various ways to perform balance exercises. Equipment like a stability ball, BOSU ball, or balance board can be incorporated.  Improving your balance can help with performing your daily activities like standing on tiptoes to reach something on the top shelf, walking up and down the stairs, or walking on an uneven pavement.

Classes at Therapeutics
At Therapeutics we have a strength and balance class run by Will Dodds on Fridays in the gym. We also have regular Pilates and Yoga classes for both men and women which incorporate balance into their content.

Pilates is a body conditioning method that works in a different way to other fitness techniques. It targets the deep postural muscles, by building strength from the inside out. Pilates rebalances the body by bringing it into correct alignment. The approach is slow and controlled, giving long term results. Pilates is suitable for anyone, from the first-time exercisers to Olympic sports people, helping re-shape your body, improving your posture and relieving stress and tension.
