The Soot House by Anthony Esteves shows us a behind the scenes on the ancient art of Shou Sugi Ban, the Japanese building technique that preserves wood by charring it with fire.
Burning boards in the traditional tunnel method ensures a deep and lasting char that is pest, mildew and fire resistant. Over the years the char will eventually fade and reveal the warm gray hue hidden beneath the char. The patina that comes with age will breathe new life into the siding, and over time weather in a soft way. The boards being burned in this video were applied to the exterior of a residential building in Maine, USA.
Anthony Esteves is an artist and designer living in Maine, USA. He holds a degree in Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design. Since 2013, his practice has been focused on residential interior and exterior architecture and design.
