One of those rare books you find that you just don't want to end.
You become so involved in the story line and the lives of the characters that you are left with a feeling of loss after turning the last page.............

What a surprising little book! I picked this up in a newsagents one day when on the way to the coffee shop with nothing to read with my coffee. An obscure author (to me, anyway), I didn't expect to finish it. But it turned out to be a real page turner and a true cozy read. The story was fascinating and made me wish for a simpler time when people really cared about each other. The narrative was easy to follow and I became totally immersed in the various lives portrayed as the characters were so well drawn. Highly recommended.

Ruby is strong minded and stubborn to a fault. her family comes first, and she neglects her own well being, even romance because of it.
I found some parts dragged on, or were confusing because not always clear who is who in the dialogue. As other reviewers pointed out some events were rushed and by the end it was difficult to keep track of who is married to or a child of who. ~

Another good read by Maureen Lee.
This is the life story of Ruby O'Hagan, it begins in 1918 and ends on the turn of the Millennium. Ruby always manages to get over her troubles, of which she has many, she has a way of looking on the bright side and getting on with life. She does have a lot of missed opportunities which only make her stronger. Ruby is all about her family, whether struggling to make ends meet in the slums of Liverpool, living through the horror of raids during the second world war or looking after her grandchildren so that her daughters. can go to work.
I preferred the first half of this book as I enjoy historical fiction but was surprised by how much I cared and wanted to follow this story through,

It is a book very easy to read, captivating at times (especially at the beginning) as the events happen in a period so different from today. however, sometime in the middle of the book i was about to quit, as it seemed that too much was going on too fast, and rather than concentrate on something, the author was just rushing through the events and fast forwarding to a certain moment that never came. it was a nice read though, and my main take away is that 'there is no use to cry over spilled milk'.

Born out of wedlock and placed in an orphanage, Ruby becomes the matriarch of a dysfunctional family of daughters and granddaughters. Each of the daughters and granddaughters develop varied personalities with different problems to overcome. All turns out well in the end.

I enjoyed this book as it took me on journey through social change from the 20's onward. The narrative followed the main character from babyhood to great-grandmother and she was an endearing, if stubborn woman battling against the odds.

Another great read by Maureen Lee. Another one I couldn’t put down. Transposing through time, the placement of the reader in different eras is skilful. 1 less star than Flora & Grace as I didn’t find this one as much as a page turner, but still an incredible story.

This book is about the life and times of Ruby, who, pretty much throughout her life, has had a tough time of it, from being taken from her mother at birth, to single parenthood herself pre-WWII. The story has a lot going for it - it's historically accurate and Maureen Lee is a good narrator, whose characters are largely realistic. There are also a few twists and turns, as many of them are disposable as far as the author is concerned. Two things irked me slightly about this book, firstly, Ruby is too much of a martyr, and at times appears cold and unlikeable, even while the author is trying to ensure we know 'she'd sacrifice anything for her children', there are many times when she treats them appallingly. The other thing is the seemingly random jumping forward in time, sometimes only two years, then five, then, right when you REALLY want to hear what has happened, because it's significant, she skips TWENTY YEARS, right at the end. Oh dear oh dear, it's as if she gave up on the story she was telling in detail and couldn't be bothered to fill in the blanks. That's why I'm giving it only three stars.

I bought The House By PRINCESS PARK  from the International bookfair at Pragati Maidan. And kinda enjoy reading it.
The Story follows Ruby, who is an unwed mother who was compelled to give her up.
This book takes you through many decades until the year 2000. It is full of world war 2, family issues, financial problems, and relationship problems. Through it, all Ruby copes keep her spirit intact and remains the glue that keeps the family going and moving collectively through many obstacles.
The writer Maureen Lee keeps things moving and does not bog the story with useless words. I can say Vocabulary is used very amazingly.

I strongly recommend this to add to your reading list.

The only reason I’m giving this book 4 stars is because it didn’t go on longer. It could have gone another 50 pages and it still wouldn’t have been enough.

I'm surprised, I really truly am.

But this book was more than just incredible or spectacular, in my opinion. It was outstanding.

It is a story of survival, of pain, of joy and incredible strength found in soft feminine nature. It is about beauty that springs from the ashes. It is a story of a family that is all but normal - and yet has so much to offer. It has a lot of love, a lot of warmth, a lot of coziness, it is a place of acceptance and tolerance, a place where you will never be judged. It is a true home and not just a house.

The main character, Ruby, left me in awe. Despite being so unfortunate and having so little, she firmy refused to be a victim. In her, you see a fighter that is doing all she can for those she loves and never complains. Despite all her flaws and wrong choices, her qualities are praise-worthy and she is a great role model. Many of her accomplishments will never cease to amaze me and many of her sayings will be remembered and will be great mottos.

This book was so cozy, almost like I was immersed into a different world. I especially loved the way Ruby and her noisy family lived during the war. Their indomitable spirits and unchangeable strength in the face of the obstacles was sorely inspirational. The characters were so well drawn, even if little was said about them, their personalities still unfolded beautifully as life went on and on. This book celebrates victory and strength, about the pain of losing and the joy of possessing what truly matters.
