July 2017 employment: US adds 209,000 jobs

According to ‘The Employment Situation‘ report released by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate in the United States decreased 0.1% to 4.3%, while the economy added 209,000 jobs, in July. The report also indicated that the number of unemployed persons in the U.S. remained stable at 7.0 million.

Employment growth has averaged 184,000 new jobs per month in 2017.

The labor force participation rate, at 62.9 percent, changed little in July and has shown little movement on net over the past year. The employment-population ratio (60.2 percent) was also little changed in July but is up by 0.4 percentage point over the year.

Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rates for adult men (4.0 percent), adult women (4.0 percent), teenagers (13.2 percent), Whites (3.8 percent), Blacks (7.4 percent),  Asians (3.8 percent), and Hispanics (5.1 percent) showed little or no change in July.

The change in employment for May 2017 was revised from 152,000 to 145,000 jobs added while June 2017 was revised from 222,000 to 231,000 jobs added. With the revisions, employment gains in these two months were 2,000 jobs more than previously reported.
