Best Practices to Keep the Peace

With politics, religion and other sensitive topics being heavily thrown out there on social media, it’s no wonder many families are forgetting the proper etiquette for family conversations. You are seated around the dinner table with family and friends when it happens, someone mentions politics and quickly the dinner conversation goes downhill. Many of these new age family units have neglected the old school rules of what family should and should not discuss when gathered together.  If you are a family who has been divided by a sensitive topic, it’s time to pull back the reigns and reunite your family by enlisting the family abide by the following family etiquette rules.

Do not discuss politics. Never, ever discuss politics with family and close friends if you value the relationship. This is a conversation that many feel passionately enough about that it can trigger a family and friendship to be ripped apart instantly and forever.

Do not discuss religion. Another sensitive topic sure to remove family and close friends from your life is religion. This is just another heated topic that many feel passionate about like politics that can quickly disintegrate a relationship and friendship.

Do not fret small stuff. There are many things that bother us about our family and friends but it doesn’t give us the right to dwell on it. Let go of the small stuff that a family or friend did, focus on what good they have done.

Remain positive in attitude. Keep your attitude positive at all family and friend gatherings. There’s no need to gather up your closest people and start ranting about everything that’s wrong. Commit to only speaking positively with family and friends.

If you take the time to make the commitment that politics and religion will not be discussed when family and friends are gathered together, then add in the ability to let go of the little things and remain positive in attitude; you will quickly find that the family stays united on a happy front. There’s no need to kill a relationship that matters dearly to you by inserting your unnecessary commentary over a gathering that was meant to bring you all closer together.
