Data is Beautiful and Small Businesses Deserve to Have it

We often hear about new companies with crazy valuations and no revenue stream. What on earth can possess a seemingly normal human being to invest in and raise the valuation of a company that makes no money? Data. There’s a saying that comes to mind, “If you’re not paying for it, you’re not the customer, you’re the product.”

At the end of the day, most of these companies have one thing in common, they’re mining data. When you, or I go onto that website or use that product we’re being tracked. From there they create profiles and can tailor ads, promotions, and new services to specific subsets of clients. More importantly, this is part of the basis for any predictive piece of software in use.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, people have been doing this since the beginning of time. Only difference now is that we have computers and a lot more people to pull the information from. That being said, it’s not very cool when companies use this info to jack up prices or to create artificial demand.

However, data can also be used to democratize opportunities and provide insight. One of the things we’ve been thinking about at ShopKetti.com is how we can provide useful data to small businesses. This would be curated information that our members could use to make more informed and targeted decisions. We believe small, independent, and new businesses all deserve to be on an equal playing field. That’s why over the next few months we’re going to start reaching out to businesses owners just like you to ask what information you would like to have.

If you have any suggestions, ideas, or examples of information your company would benefit by having let us know by leaving a comment or emailing us at hello@shopketti.com!
