People spend about 229,961 hours, or about a third of their lives sleeping. Hence, investing in a good quality mattress is very important for a good night’s rest. While purchasing a quality mattress is a good first step to a peaceful sleep, it doesn’t end there. Taking the time to maintain your mattress will keep it in excellent shape and prolong its life. Here are some useful tips to help you maintain your mattress.

1. Flip or rotate your mattress every 3 months.

Take the time to rotate your mattress every couple of months. Flipping it to the other side every so often is also a good idea. Rotating and flipping your mattress will let the pressure of the mattress even out, allowing it to wear evenly and last longer. This will help avoid body impressions on your mattress.

2. Air it out

Letting your mattress air occasionally for a few hours is also a good idea, especially if it is in contact with direct sunlight. The sun is a natural disinfectant and will help get rid of bacteria and dust mites that are living in your mattress. If possible, try airing out your mattress every month.

3. Vacuum your mattress

Taking the time to vacuum your mattress is also important for keeping your mattress fresh and clean. You can begin by vacuuming the upper portion of your mattress. Then, work towards the bottom in overlapping and narrow paths. Press firmly on your mattress to exhaust the dust that lies underneath the mattress. Vacuum the sides of the mattress in the same manner. Use the crevice tool to reach the quilting, edge welting and any point where there are any attachments. A garment steamer can also help in killing the dust mites that might be living in your mattress.

4. Deodorize your mattress

Another important step to maintain your mattress is to deodorize it. Our body smell remains in our mattresses, even if we don’t notice it at first. To get rid of this, you can add some baking soda and rub it in using a brush. Let the baking soda remain for 10 minutes. You can vacuum your mattress after this process to remove the moisture and odor.

5. Purchase a mattress protector

The most common stains that mattresses normally acquire are urine, blood and other body fluids. They are not normally removed immediately so you need to take extra steps in order to remove them. If you want to avoid the hassle of having to thoroughly clean your mattress or having to purchase a new one altogether, consider getting a mattress protector. Choose a mattress protector that will protect you from allergens and irritants such as bed bugs and mold.
