Healing His Medic
Doctor Comfort Djan is looking for salvation after a tragic accident, which takes her to deprived regions where her skills heal the helpless. Until Fate thrusts her as a medic on board a West African military coastal protection ship. I'm not a diehard romance reader, but I do enjoy Nana Prah's books. Her characters are culturally diverse, with lively personalities, interesting backstories and her settings are usually in exotic places.
Healing His Medic is no exception.
In this story, we find Dr. Comfort Djan and Commander Akin Solarin aboard a joint West African Naval Ship, The Reckoning, sailing the seas off the coast of West Africa apprehending pirates. (Did I mention I love Ms. Prah's character's name?) While docked, the ship's doctor falls ill and Dr. Djan, with a military background of her own, treats him. She is then invited to join the crew, temporarily as the ship's doctor, because the ship can't sail without one on aboard.
Akin is put in charge to watch of Comfort - the only woman on a ship full of men. Due to nightmares from a past tragedy, Comfort is afraid to sleep alone and requests a room mate. They refurbish a 4 man berthing room into a two man bunk, and Comfort and Akin become roomies.
Amid sexual harassment, pirates looming out in the distant sea, and Comfort's work in the infirmary, she and Akin get to know each other, mostly at night while they lie in their bunks, behind their privacy curtains, talking to each other. If you think a berthing room on a navy ship isn't romantic, you're wrong. The tension ran high and it worked well.
I liked everything about Healing His Medic. Comfort is a strong, fierce woman with vulnerabilities. Akin, a career sailor who loves the sea, is rough and gruff on the outside. His responsibility is to keep his crew safe and he can't let his guard down. While their physical attraction was immediate, the romance grew at a slower pace, which I like. There were fun, light moments but tough issues were also tackled. A very good read.

This was such a lovely romance. *sigh*
This author has a way of creating characters that stick in your heart long after the book is finished.
Comfort, a nurse with a background of loss and pain is such a delightful character. Her independent spirit is admirable. Despite the horrible experience she went through, she kept pushing.
I also love Akin. They are a good match and his shy nature is also endearing.
I only wish I saw more of them together outside the ship scene.
I recommend this book to romance lovers.

I read the last twenty-five pages of Healing His Medic with a smile on my face. And, that was after reading the rest of the book nodding my head and pumping my fist in the air.
Comfort Djan is the heroine I’ve been waiting for.
Heartbreaking loss has left her scarred and with deep-seated fears that make night-time the enemy, but as a former army reservist, and a medical doctor, Comfort is cool, calm, and committed.
Until she encounters Commander Akin Solarin.
From humble beginnings, Akin’s commitment to his job and his love for the sea come before everything, until he meets Comfort.
When Comfort and Akin are forced to work together, the gruff military man takes quiet pride in her strength but knows it masks pain he wishes he could release her from.
While Comfort Djan sees herself as nothing special and struggles with survivor’s guilt, others can’t help but see her intelligence and confidence in her abilities. There are those who immediately discount and underestimate her… and yes, objectify her, but she takes it all in stride, undeterred from her job. She’s not snippy, sassy, or whiny, but angering her is not something anyone should do.
Although Akin positions himself as Comfort’s protector, he soon comes to realize she doesn’t need saving, she needs forgiveness… from herself. Determined to protect her from the dangers of his job and the merciless pirates of the sea, no one saw the danger closest to them.
I loved everything about Healing His Medic. Two people with high emotional walls, see in each other what they hide from the world. The growing relationship between Comfort and Akin isn’t a battle of the sexes or even of wills… they’re each their own worst enemy battling with self, afraid to believe they can have it all.
The story weaves its way to a great ending full of compromise and partnership all for love.
I’ve read several books by this author over the last few years and enjoyed their African settings and cultural flare, but this one is different (and my favorite)—she’s gone to the next level with the slow build and suspense. This is another of those reads I volunteered to review an ARC… and purchased the book before I reached the end.

Great.
I love romantic suspense or military/service romance and whilst this is not exactly suspenseful, it is set on a naval ship and it is a great breezy and romantic read for anyone who loves a gruff hero with a marshmallow soft center and a super sharp, competent, kick butt heroine.
The premise is that Comfort, a British MSF doctor of Ghanaian origin, is assigned to be the emergency relief physician on board a pirate-hunting ship on the coast of West Africa, after their regular doctor is injured. Akin, a commander on a Joint West African Naval ship, is assigned responsibility for her safety especially as she’s the only woman on the ship. With a devastating tragedy in her past, being the only woman on the ship is the least of Comfort’s problems especially with her growing attraction to Akin. Akin on the other hand is married to the sea and has a failed marriage behind him to prove it, but for the first time begins to wonder what if.
This was a really enjoyable read. I know very little about the navy or the military in general so plausibility was fine for me. I find nothing romantic in piracy so I was happy that the plot centered on a ship that was fighting this scourge. I loved the characters and what they meant to each other, I liked that the plot was kind of gentle. I liked that Comfort was a competent and strong and great at her job even as she tackled grief, I liked Akin’s super relatable back story, and I appreciated that bit of suspense at the end and the epilogue. This is one of my favourites I’ve read from this author and I recommend it if you’re looking for a gentle military read. Content Warning for sexual harassment and assault as well as death of loved ones.

A special story. I enjoyed seeing the female as the one with the PTS type issues. Comfort helped treat the Medic from the team of Navy Specialists whose job it is to deal with the Pirates plaguing the area. Little did she know she'd also be treating his team while he recovered.
When they first met her at the hospital some hit on her, some ignored her, and Akin did his best not to do the first. Joining a crack team like this wouldn't be easy and even harder for a woman. Still, she proved her worth, took no guff but didn't push back too hard. Respect was hard won. The attraction between herself and their leader didn't make it easier on either of them.
As he began to know her the pain inside was more visible. He wanted to take it away. Doing his job was hard enough. When she was in the middle of the danger he wouldn't let it happen. But, could he save her? And if he did he knew he couldn't let her go.
A book with heroes of both genders, a unique setting not usually seen. I recommend it.

Comfort and Akin meet in the ER when he brings a crew mate in. From the start, one can feel their attraction.Both dismiss their attraction to each other since they will not see themselves again. However, things change when Comfort is offered a job on Akin's ship.
Yes, a ship! A warship, to be precise. Such an unexpected setting for a sweet romance novel. However, it works so well for the story.
With Comfort, Nana brings us another of her signature badass heroines. We (along with the hero) learn that behind her tough exterior lies scars from a very traumatic past. It was a change of pace to have a heroine with PTSD.
The romance between Akin and Comfort was very sweet and believable. I found them to be well-matched. I also liked the cast of secondary characters, a couple of whom I hope will get a story of their own.
I look forward to more from the Protectors series.

I've grown fond of this author's books. The characters always seem to have such a great chemistry with each other as well as the supporting Characters. One thing I really liked about the story was the heroine. She w shocked a lot of characters in the story as well as myself. She didn't pull any punches, she was smart. I also liked that the hero was determined to protect her even before they got together. They were a great match for each other.

I enjoyed reading Healing His Medic. The characters and storyline are well written and enjoyable. I was drawn in from the beginning and had a hard time putting it down. I love Comfort’s strength and Akin’s intensity. A great read for anyone!

Two wonderful stories filled with adventure, suspense and romance.
Swoon-worthy protective heroes I want to keep forever. Commander Akin stole my heart and Zach can play undercover agent with me any day. 😘
And not to dismiss the sassy heroines who were matches for the men. Neither of them took any bs and I would have them in my corner any day.
Both stories took me on adventures across different African landscapes: from West Africa and a Navy frigate to East Africa and the Mauritian Islands.
I highly recommend to all lovers of romantic suspense and contemporary romance!
