UVFoodSafe: Compliant printing for food with confidence

UVFoodSafe is a cross-industry consortium of FINAT converters, ink formulators, equipment manufacturers and RadTech Europe, which was established with the purpose to improve confidence in end-user and converter communities in the use of UV printing for food labels and packaging. For almost two years now, this consortium, which consists of two task forces (Print and Process) and a management committee chaired by FINAT, has been working hard to optimise printing and UV curing processes, select the right materials, determine sampling and migration testing and align the various data.

Today, key factors influencing the UV curing process in printing have been identified and the impact of cure on final print quality and migration compliance assessed. Methods for the measurement and control of UV dose during printing and the assessment of ink curing during and after printing have been evaluated. Best practice guidance for the preparation and printing of migration compliant print in a controlled and repeatable way is in development.

At the Technical Seminar, on Thursday 5 March, Jonathan Sexton, Marketing Manager Energy Curing and Narrow Web of Sun Chemical, member of the FINAT Technical Committee and member of the UVFoodSafe Management Committee will give an update on the initiative.
