The Big Eyewear Trends Of 2020

This article is more than 4 years old.

A pair of gold oversized grandma sunnies with lightly tinted ombre lens was the finishing touch to a very basic t-shirt and trousers combo. It had been in the wardrobe for over a decade, and has since proven itself a worthy investment. The pair had been to long brunches with perfectly coiffed ladies. It’s spent endless hours under the golden sun, on some of the world’s most picturesque shores. The very same pair, a lifetime ago, was the trusted remedy for excruciating days following long sleepless nights. While not intending to make eyewear my life staple, it has unknowingly become just that.

It’s easy to perceive eyewear as an afterthought. It is, for some, an indulgence, something that one can do without. And while this may certainly hold true, eyewear is also the one finishing touch that distinguishes an ensemble and its wearer. The affair with good, reliable eyewear spans decades, and sees its wearer through various phases in a life. Little wonder then that well-dressed folk will advice on investing in a trusty pair or two—or three.

As the promise sunnier days fast approach, consider adding these stylish specs to the Spring/Summer wardrobe.

THE WORLD THROUGH CANDY COLORED LENSES. Tinted lens have been around for several seasons now, but there are new hues under the fashion radar worth incorporating into your look this season. Baby or millennial pink lenses bring forth a vintage feel to your look and go well with an vintage 70s inspired frame or future-perfect wrap around shades. Shades of blue, anchored on the year’s Classic Blue Pantone, are definitely off-the-moment where statement eyewear is concerned. You’ll especially love them on sleek iterations of the cat’s eye or John Lennon-esque spectacles.

ROUGE REALNESS. A pop of red is a great way to break the monotony of neutrals. It is also an expression of confidence, power and strength. In adding accents to a look, red is almost always the default choice. This should not only apply to the bag, nails, shoes and the sole of a shoe (as in the case of the brilliant Louboutin). Consider a bold red frame for your eyewear. Red lenses are also an option.

EMBELLISHED AND SCALLOPED. Fashion greats like Iris Apfel, Elton John, the late Karl Lagerfeld and Lady Gaga have been donning sparkly or unusually shaped eyewear for years now. It is this attitude for thinking—and dressing—beyond convention that makes them thought leaders in the style world. This season, designer shave decided to add more sparkle to your favorite runways looks with blinged out eyewear.

BOLD AVIATORS AND GRAPHIC SHAPES. Classic shapes whether aviator, cat’s eye, rectangular, oversized or round were reimagined this season through bold and graphic lines. Done in colors like white, black or gray, this new look for eyewear impresses like modern-day nod to mod. It is also a look that can go well with any style sensibility regardless of season.
