Wildcats Topple No. 16 Oklahoma in 2-0 Season Opener

NORMAN, Okla. – The Arizona women's soccer team defeated No. 16 Oklahoma on Friday night by a score of 2-0. Jill Aguilera got the first goal of the game on a breakaway chance that she slotted past the Oklahoma goalkeeper off a pass from Amanda Porter. Hailey Mazzola got the second tally off a centering pass from Porter. Lainey Burdett earned the 11th shutout of her career, having to make only one save. The Cats outshot OU 16-5, while forcing the Sooners' goalkeeper to make seven saves.

"We learned a lot about our team tonight," said head coach Tony Amato. "To come here, play well, and get the win shows that we are hungry to have a successful season. I liked the commitment and work we put in as a group and am happy that it paid off for our team."

44' – Aguilera got a breakaway chance and calmly slotted the ball past Crone into the right corner of the net. It was her first tally of the season after overcoming a season-ending knee injury last year.

66' – Mazzola scored after Bennett had a breakaway chance that was pushed out and then returned to the center of the box by Porter.

4' – Maddie Bennett dished to Gabi Stoian on the right side of the field, who then found Cali Crisler in the center of the box but OU's McKinley Crone made the save.

5' – Crisler crossed to Stoian down low, who cut to the left but just pushed her shot past the right post.

10' – Morgan McGarry locked down the right-hand side of the pitch to keep any chances away from OU.

16' – Lainey Burdett got her first touch of the match, diving on a deep ball played over the top of her defense.

19' – Bennett was fouled about 30 yards away from the frame, Stoian's free kick was driven into the hands of Crone.

29' – Crisler broke down the left side of the field and crossed to Hannah Clifford who was called for offsides in the center of the box.

31' – First corner kick for the Wildcats, Kelcey Cavarra got her head on it but the effort went wide left.

40' – Kennedy Kieneker took a free kick from about 30 yards but her shot sailed high.

49' – Burdett made a key play by diving on an errant touch from an OU breakaway to prevent a shot

55' – Burdett made another save diving to her right side and catching a shot but falling out of bounds. The resultant corner generated no chances for OU.

61' – Bennett had a breakaway chance versus Crone but the OU keeper made a kick save to keep out the shot.

66' – Mazzola scored after Bennett had a breakaway chance that was pushed out and then returned to the center of the box by Porter.

76' – Burdett used a two-handed punch to knock away an Oklahoma corner kick

79' – Mazzola played a deep ball over the top to Moga, who took a shot but it was covered up by Crone.
