Shortly before I graduated college I went to my university’s career center to get help with creating my first “real” resume and to get some tips on how to not crash and burn during the interview process for my first adult job.

It’s valuable help when you’re starting out. What you may not realize is that many colleges and universities will offer that help to alumni as well.

You likely paid your school of choice a huge chunk of change at some point, so it’s in their best interest to make you feel like that investment was worth it. Fast Company recently spoke a few schools about what types of career services alumni can get free of charge or for a small fee after they graduate. The answer? Quite a lot.

Your alma mater’s career services can help you create the perfect resume and cover letter can help conduct a mock interview, and can even help you figure out what career might be good for you if you’re interested in change.

The career services department at your school might also have access to “hidden” job listings that haven’t been posted yet. For instance, if an alumnus from your school owns a company, he or she might share an available opening with the school before sharing it with the masses as a way to potentially hire another alumnus for the job.

Obviously, if you went to school far away from your current location some of these services might not quite work out for you, but if you’re still nearby where you went to school the office you be a solid resource to check out. If nothing else it’s worth a call to see what might be available for you.
