As a social worker in the early '90s, a majority of Tracy Jones' cases were people dealing with depression.

"Most were depressed because they were in pain which affected their ability to enjoy life," Jones said.

So, he quit to become a massage therapist and help heal pain in a different way.

"I've been in the area since 2005 and decided it's time to open my own establishment," Jones said.

A grand opening soiree will be held for the new business, Tampa Bay Sports and Medical Massage, on Sept. 14 at 4100 W Kennedy Blvd., occupying the top floor of the office building.

Attendees can learn about their services and future plans like classes for stretching, educational programs and nutrition and health lectures.

"There's the peak performers, the weekend warriors and those who are in chronic pain," Jones said. "It's not uncommon for me to get people who are post-surgical and have continued symptoms, all the way to people who strain their back moving furniture."

Jones has also worked with a college professor, high school, college and professional athletes.

"We have a scientific application of massage therapy techniques where we have a system for evaluating what we're doing and whether it works," Jones said. "The bottom line is 'do you feel better' but we have measurements that makes us decide what to do."

Tampa Bay Sports and Medical Massage is operating in soft opening stages, but is open for appointments.
