Solar Eclipse Safety

On Behalf of | Aug 18, 2017 | Blog, Personal Injury |

On Monday, August 21, the United States will experience a natural phenomenon that only happens once in a lifetime, in some cases. Though New York City will only be roughly under 77 percent coverage, there are some parts of the country that will experience a total solar eclipse. To show how rare total solar eclipses are, here is an example.

The last time New York City experienced a total solar eclipse was on January 24, 1925. There won’t be another total solar eclipse in New York City until May 1, 2079. That’s 154 years apart.

Because many people will be able to see the solar eclipse in the New York Area (even though they can’t see the total solar eclipse) it is important to be aware of some safety tips. If you look directly at the sun during a solar eclipse, you can risk going blind. Whatever you do, do not look directly at the sun during the eclipse without protective eclipse glasses.

There are a number of authorized manufacturers that sell these glasses. Amazon recently had to crack down on those who are selling fake solar eclipse glasses. It’s a good thing they did because anyone who bought them may lose their vision. There are also a number of ways that you can make a solar eclipse viewer with a shoe box or even a pasta strainer. Do plenty of research on do-it-yourself methods to make sure you are being safe.

Also be sure not to look at an eclipse through a camera lens, telescope or binoculars without these glasses because your eyes can be damaged.

If you have been the victim of eye damage due to faulty eclipse glasses, please contact an experienced product liability attorney.
