Looking for a new kitchen sink? Consider granite composite. This compact-construction material brings cutting-edge style to a kitchen — and thanks to the high density of granite particles, it offers superior resistance to scratches, chips and heat. Some are calling it the most durable composite sink material on the market, though it's not care-free. Is it for you? See how it looks in kitchens and get some pros, cons and maintenance tips.

The basics: Granite composite sinks are about 80 percent granite and 20 percent acrylic resin. The combination of granite and acrylic makes for an extremely durable material and surface, beating out quartz composite for strength and scratch resistance. Commonly found in dark hues, granite composite can be custom made in an array of matte colors.
Cost: From $250 to $550. These sinks are so reasonably priced mainly because they're a blend of materials and not solid granite.

Advantages: Resistant to scratches, stains, chips and household acids, granite composite looks and feels like natural matte stone. Granite composite sinks will not fade in color when exposed to high heat, and they can accommodate hot pots and pans — resisting heat up to 535 degrees Fahrenheit.
Disadvantages: Due to the manufacturing process, granite composite sinks are available only in matte finishes. Since granite is a porous material, these sinks are prone to stains from waterborne minerals, which can dull the finish over time.
Sustainability: Granite composite sinks do not require chemical cleaners, reducing the amount of chemicals that enter our water supply.
Maintenance: While it can stand up to scratches and heat, granite composite does require careful maintenance to keep up its appearance. Wash it daily with a soapy nylon brush in a circular motion to help prevent stains. Dry it with a dishcloth after daily use to help avoid stains from hard-water deposits.
Never use abrasive powders or pads on a granite composite sink — they will dull and scratch the surface, making it more susceptible to stains. Many manufacturing companies offer specialized cleaning products that will keep your sink in great condition.
