July Newsletter

Welcome to the Summer SES newsletter. We kicked off the season with a range of exciting events for researchers and are pleased to have just opened registrations for our September event, Harnessing FAIR Datathe final instalment of SES Open.  Held at Queen Mary University of London in partnership with UCL, the afternoon symposium focuses on researchers who employ, or are seeking to employ, FAIR and Open data in their work - FAIR is a set of guiding principles to make data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.

We are pleased to confirm our keynote speaker, Prof. Pam Thomas, Pro Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Warwick and Chair of the
Open Research Data Taskforce.  We will also be welcoming a range of researcher and industry speakers.

Join Us for the event - we currently have one remaining space for an SES Researcher lightning talk, as well as poster presentations. If you or a colleague are interested in presenting your work with FAIR/Open data, please get in touch. We are particularly interested in hearing from researchers based at The Universities of Oxford and Southampton, and King's College London.

This month we're joined by Vicky Butt from King's College London and Research/hers Code. She discusses a new approach to fighting microbial resistance and reveals the alluring field of Computer Science, attracting different students with interests ranging from Fashion to Oncology.  Vicky's is the first in a series of interviews with researchers and staff across SES, as we shine a light on exciting science and new communities developing across the consortium.

For our recent events, take a look below. Susan Sun from the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Energy Storage and its Applications (ESA) delivers a candid vision for the future as she reflects on Data Mining: Exploring the Ethical Dilemmas and her own solar energy research - "I’m one of those people in a moral panic about machine learning perpetuating existing inequalities. However, I‘d also like everyone’s electricity usage data for my research" she deliberates.
