The building of the former Cyprus Turkish Airlines’ (CTA) headquarters in Lefkoşa was given to the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation last week.
The building, composed of an administrative section and ticket reservations section, was put up for auction in the past weeks but could not be sold. Undersecretary of the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation Kemal Bağzıbağlı said the building taken over by the Ministry will be used to station the Driving Licence and Inspection Unit, Vehicle Registration and Licencing Section, and Licence Renewal Unit.
All traffic units under the Traffic Department will move, within a few years, to the complex that will also include a Traffic Education Track.
The tender for the Project will be opened soon, and the system that will allow online payment of vehicle registration and road tax will start operating this autumn. Undersecretary Kemal Bağzıbağlı said the current building used by the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Section, under the Traffic Department, was the most inefficient and problematic building used by the public sector. He said the same thing could also be said for the apartment rented out for the Driving Licence and Inspection Unit in Ortaköy.
Bağzıbağlı said once the Driving Licence and Inspection Unit, Vehicle Registration and Licensing Section, and Licence Renewal Unit moved to the Cyprus Turkish Airlines’ building, people will be able to carry out all their relevant transactions – such as driving licence exams, issuing a licence and registering a vehicle – under one roof. Bağzıbağlı added that the Driving Licence and Inspection Unit will be moving to the new building at the end of the month and other units and sections will move in August. The Cyprus Turkish Airlines building was put into auction for the third time on June 22, 2018 and was bought by the Ministry of Finance, who was the only bidder, for 3 million 678 thousand pounds.
